Don’t cry for me, Argentina . . .

No, not “Evita!” the musical sensation of the 1970s about Eva Peron.

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is living out loud and proud, trying to patch things up with his girlfriend.  It was all a misunderstanding — when we heard Appalachian trail, he said “Argentinian tail”. [see http://40andoverblog.com/p?120]

But, at least he isn’t lying anymore and he maintains contact with his government on his weekends away.  If only other “family values” candidates would be open about marital issues, gay issues and the tough stuff of life that affects all of us, maybe we can re-calibrate expectations of our politicians and ourselves.  I am not saying that infidelity and lying are ok. I am saying live the truth so you don’t have to lie.  So many less lives get shattered that way.

He behaved like a child but he is trying to live as grown-up now.  It is a good start.

You GO, Jenny Sanford

Your leaving the Governor’s mansion with your boys sets a better example than staying.  Spouses should expect respect, love and support from each other.  Children learn what to expect from relationships from their parents and, too often, TV.  It is just not ok for a spouse to disappear and, upon reappearing, publicly declare love for another person.  That is selfish, and emotionally abusive.  Does Gov. Sanford want his kids to model that behavior?

Oh I forgot.  Gov. Sanford is part of the C Street group — so holy, they can do what they want.  See Doonesbury comic strip about the C Street guys.  Thank you, Rachel Maddow, for tweeting about this.

Sen. Paul Stanley, R-Tennessee, Mr. Family Values

Ok, ok, ok, ok, ok.  Lemme get this straight.

Sen. David Vitter, Louisiana, Sen. John Ensign, Nevada, Gov. Mark Sanford, S. Carolina — what do these gentlemen and Sen. Stanley have in common?  They are sanctimonious, self-satisfied “family-values” politicians who were hoisted on their own petards.

Worse, Sen. Stanley, who took lewd pictures of his 22-year old intern during the time of their affair, blames her.  He is 47 and she is 22.  He has a family and presumably of suitable age, discretion and intelligence to represent the State of Tennessee.

He isn’t hiding behind a 22 year-old, is he?  Nah.  Can’t be.  Only someone gutless and unprincipled would do that.   So, it can’t be.  WAIT.  I think Pauly IS a gutless, unprincipled loser.  And he is angry that he has to resign.  As if he did nothing to bring about this morality play.

I get it: she let herself into his apartment.  She put the camera in his hand.  She put his . . . .  Wow, now I get it.  It is a lily-livered lefty lemming conspiracy (thank you, Lou Dobbs for that phrase) to expose GOP hypocrisy.

Where is the outrage?  Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?  Bueller?

Thought for the day, July 9, 2009

Obama is back on the hot seat now that Jacko is dead, Sarah Palin is the Political Undead and Gov. Sanford got a “get out of jail free” card.  Now the pundits are focused on the economy and why Obama hasn’t produced miracles yet.

If I were Obama, I would hope that another pop icon or political enigma hogs the airwaves for at least 6 months.

Gov. Sanford is really lucky.

Just when it looked like he could never recover, Michael Jackson died and Sarah Palin resigned.

And Michael Jackson is still dead (as is Generalissimo Francisco Franco) and will presumably stop making news some time soon.

But Sarah Palin will forever make headlines and late night joke lines and blogoshpere fodder. She is the Political Undead.

Sanford owes her big.

The SC Governor and the Tattooed Girl

Who is more lame, the girl who had 56 stars tattooed on her face and who (out of a little-too-little-a-little-too-late fear of her parents’ hysteria) claimed she fell asleep while someone was drilling ink in her face or the family values governor of South Carolina who flew to Argentina to visit his mistress over Father’s Day weekend and claiming that he took a long hike along the Appalachian trail? I think the governor is more lame because he is older and supposed to know better.  And this guy was someone planning to run for President in 2012. Thank G-d we found out now that he has no, or supremely bad, judgment.  I would have appreciated a Heavenly heads-up about Bush II.
