Birther conspiracy theorists and Obama’s Mama

I miss the Jon and Kate plus 8 drama.  I never watched them, never cared about their marriage issues, her diva episodes or his new girlfriend.  Now I am sad that they don’t even hit the summary page on Yahoo anymore.

Why? Because now we read about the birthers, the ones — including GOP congressmen — who think that President Obama was actually foreign born and uses a fake Hawaiian birth certificate.  To be fair, on The Chris Matthews’ show, a congressman said that if John McCain had been elected, we would be talking about him in this way, as well.

So these birther conspiracy theorist would have had a field day over a white male Vietnam War hero born to a Navy admiral living on an American base in the Panama Canal Zone?  Let’s ponder this.  Hmmm.  I think not.

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii to a mother who was a US CITIZEN.  So, what these people are really talking about is President Obama’s MAMA.  Now, if you talk about someone’s mother, be prepared for yours to be dragged into the fray.

If we all go back far enough, one or more of our grandparents or great grandparents were born somewhere outside the United States.  I am not an immigration scholar, but if my mother who was born in, and a citizen of, the United States gave birth to me in Toronto, Canada, while on vacation, wouldn’t I still be eligible to be a sitting president?

Thought for Today, July 23, 2009: Unpatriotic Fox News

For eight long years, I was one of those “unpatriotic” Americans because I loved this country and disagreed with the Bush administration and its policies.  But I still watched the president’s press conferences and respected the presidency while I had trouble with the man in that office (don’t get me started on Cheney).

Fox News thinks it is ok not to show a presidential press conference because it is opposed to President Obama’s politics.  In the prior administration, the talking heads would be challenging the patriotism of any news outlet that didn’t carry a press conference.  Are those at Fox News selectively patriotic, as in only when a conservative is president?

I loved this country and respected the government even when I personally hated the policies.  What is Fox News’s excuse?

New York is the best show on earth

This  is why I love New York.  Here is this old, bent-over man playing those electric organs while the these gaudily dressed dolls “dance” to his music.  He does get help setting up and big  tips.

Another transit experience

Tonight, on the train, there is an older man with great posture and bearing with dreds piled on top of his head wrapped in a turban the color of ivory with a hint of pink.  The turban is high like a Cat in the Hat hat.  My first thought was “penis head”.  Remember, I’m a lesbian and my heterosexual man-woman sex days were decades ago. So, believe me when I say that it looks like a penis because that is not the first thing that might pop into my mind unless compelled from my memory cells deep in the recesses of my brain.

I decide not to share this with elegant-man-but-for-the-penis-on-his-head.

Travel

Ok, I hate flying more than ever. Before blogging, I gave the following report via blackberry to my friends while I was in the San Franscisco airport some months ago.  It was a turning point in my view of air travel as a pleasant means of getting from point A to B.

******************************************************************************

There is a woman walking around with a pillow. A full sized pillow with a case that has a pattern of small flowers. She is our age. I see her point but I am not wearing my jammies and fluffy slippers.

Did you know that wheel chairs come in LARGE now? I wish that I could read a book but I am too uptight and stressed. All I want to do is get on that plane and drift off to sleep.

Oooohh, give me a seat boys, come free my soul, I wanna get lost in my reclining seat and drift away. Music fades.

There is a screaming child. A screaming child on a red eye. Excuse me while I throw myself onto the tarmac.

I am freezing in this airport and other people are wearing thin clothes. I know it’s California, but it was cold and wet today in San Francisco.

I have to go to the bathroom but it has probably gotten too much use today and maybe I’ll wait and be the first on the plane to use. It is a delicate balance.

Should I ask the man across the seats why he picks his nose so blatantly and then rubs his discovery on his pants?  Maybe I can borrow his books. Noooooo.

Baby’s cryin’ and my patience is all gone…. Oh, S. Frisco. (As in JT’s “Mexico”).

More tales from NYC transit

Civilization is rounding the drain. Here is my experience from last week.

The hem of my pants fell so I was forced to staple the hem to the lining of my pants. So I am wearing a custom made jacket and pants but I am really put together by spit, scotch tape and now staples. As goes the economy, there go I.

Ooh, some nice, loud gum cracking and it is only 79th Street.

If only you knew the conversations on this bus. You’d be surprised how many kinds of macaroni and cheese a person can have in her pantry. The kind obviously matters. Apparently, one could be in the mood for let’s say Swanson’s but not Chef Boyardee. The third option was to go to the store, not for something entirely different but for a different kind of mac’n’cheese. I didn’t hear the outcome of this woman’s conversation with “Johnny” but I’ll try to remember to watch local news to find out what happened.

A young man on the bus is presenting paranoid obsessive behavior. No ability to modulate his voice. Stops in mid-sentence. Keeps talking about all of the records he is keeping about his boss’s refusal to acknowledge overtime and saying that his boss would rather kill him than pay him for five hours of overtime work. He is well-kempt and his keeps mentioning that his mom wants him to come home and live with her, so he is not alone (and he also has his not-so-sane friend who is listening to him). It is too sad for words.
Even I can’t make snide remarks. There but for the grace of G-d go I.

There is a (former) banker-type committing the inexcusable crime of cell-yell which crime is only further aggravated by the subject matter: his brother’s court date (and I don’t mean for a squash game).

There is what appears at first impression to be a couple (because they are conversing and have near identical shades of tan). But as I am rocked to and fro by the potholes, I hear the following snippet: “where did you get YOUR tan” asked he. “Central Park and a salon near me” said she. “Ahhhh” said he as our erstwhile Romeo moved slightly away to avoid further conversation.

The bus clears out somewhat at 86th Street and reveals a man with the most abominable toupe that hangs down to the tip of his oversized sun glasses. Imagine Peter Sellers (of the Pink Panther movies) in a schtick about the hapless undercover spy or a character in those early 1970s movies about the swinging singles apartment buildings.

Two men get on the bus through the back door at 96th Street. One fits the stereotype of a fare cheat; the other seems solidly middle class. If I were truly my mother’s daughter, I would sit next to each of them in turn and explain the importance of paying one’s fare.

I then came to a frightening conclusion — the mildewy smell that is mixed with pungent body odor (which has had time to ferment no doubt) is in the fabric of my seat and back rest, does NOT belong to the ever so grim man next to me. Just like the Seinfeld episode, the smell will follow me even after I disrobe. I may have to have my body dry-cleaned. It is almost sport to see how many times you can travel on a bus before you get tagged with someone else’s gross body odor. The thrill of the challenge and the agony of defeat.
Time to get off the bus.

Dick Cheney — the next generation

Liz Cheney is defending her father and possibly running for office. I would be grateful if she went back into the closet because she gives gays and lesbians a bad name. Maybe she can use the man-size safe that her father used for his regular top secret expense reports as her home office.

Tattoos

I hate tattoos. I think they mar an absolutely amazing work of evolution — the human body. It also must hurt. And, ink in the skin can’t be a good thing. But, tattoos are everywhere, even on 60-something people who didn’t get them in the military.

So, now I try to look at them instead of looking away. What do they say about the person? They must be clues to a person’s identity or life story. Or am I giving people too much credit?

I must read up on this because if there is meaning in these tattoos, then there is a whole new level to people watching.

Dick Cheney demeans us all

Cheney unlawfully withheld information from the Congress, violated the rights of our fellow citizens and approved torture. We regularly incarcerate people for crimes lesser than the ones he committed. How is this different from the goings-on in third world nations that we regularly deride as having corrupt governments? Thank you, Dick Cheney, for putting us on the same level as a country ruled by a belligerent and paranoid dictator.

China

Why do we refer to that vast expanse and culturally diverse land simply as “China”? Each region is so distinct, with its cultural, tribal and religious nuances and, as we see in the news, bloody clashes. I know nothing about China, but it seems that describing China without at least specifying a region is a little like trying to describe all of the Americas in one thought. And we know that there is no unifying generality that applies to all of the Americas.

We need to understand China, because in this world it is hard to be so ignorant of 1 billion people.
