Wolf, when I said news. . . .

In another blog entry, I begged the news outlets to talk about the news.  Not that anyone is listening to me, but Wolf Blitzer did start talking about the health care debate.

His guest pundit:  Bill Maher.

HE IS A COMEDIAN NOT A HEALTH CARE EXPERT!!

We need to make some distinctions, here:

SCHNEWS — a program that focuses more on the interpersonal relationship of the newscasters.  Example: AC 360

ENTERNEWSMENT — is a show that starts out as comedy show, reality show and ACTUALLY provides news:  Example: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

DRIVEL — everything else.

Chocolates, PUH-leeze

So my partner and I celebrated ten years together by packing up for two nights/one day at a hotel in the city (no names, but it is in Tribeca and has the word Grand in the name).  I bet it was meant to be a groovy, gritty and cool hotel.  It was a little like being on the set of CSI: Whatever, where they all work in the dark.  Obviously no one old enough to need bifocals has anything to do with these shows (other than Horatio who doesn’t have to move his body — just his arms to lift his sunglasses on and off his face).  Is that why the guy on the original CSI had to leave?  Maybe if someone turned up the lights. . ..  But I digress.  So, this place is so dimly lit that a normal person could walk into a wall or a draped wall, in this way too groovy place.  The rooms had the same lighting issues.  Oh, I get it.  Eco-friendliness.  Nah, not eco-friendliness on purpose. Dark, gritty cool — that was the intent.  The rooms were tiny and had this post-apocalyptic decor.  There was a sad goldfish in a stark bowl in the room because apparently rental pets soothe a person who is staying in a Mad-Max-Beyond-Thunderdome room.

The staff was young and beautiful.  Clearly the only two criteria.  Experience and manners, well, those are so old-school. Also old school are adequate lighting, cheery decor (which can be chic as well — think Design Within Reach) and chocolates with turn-down service.  The economy is bad, I know, and I could give these people a few hints on customer service that might increase the rate of repeat customers.  Hint no. 1: don’t scrimp on the chocolates.

Thought for today, July 5, 2009

There is a New York Times Sunday metro article  that profiles extraordinary New Yorkers, entitled “one in a million”. If there are eight million people in NYC, does that mean there are 7 others exactly like that person.  If that article were in a newspaper in China, would it be called “one in a billion”?  If the article were translated into Chinese, would it read, “Just like one thousand others”?

The person who came up with three-day weekends even if the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday should be a national hero. And we should celebrate this person with a three-day weekend.

Typical Indignities of Life

Ok, so I flushed my work blackberry down the toilet. No joke. ACCIDENTALLY. It fell out of my back pocket. I was wondering why I didn’t notice the flash of lights and rainbows the millions of times I had flushed before. It really caught my eye. I thought, why have I never noticed such beauty in an otherwise unsanitary event. Then I realized. And still I thought: true poetry in motion.

It wouldn’t go down so I had to retrieve it (with plastic gloves, which I then threw out). The thing is water-logged and disgusting (not THAT disgusting in THAT way).

On that Monday (a week ago), I tried to avoid telling the IT person what happened. But she wanted me to return the damaged one so she could get me a new one under the warranty. So I told her there was an unfortunate submersion accident. She still insisted. I said, “I can’t send it to you because of the unsanitary nature of the submersion event such that in order to send it you I would have to ruined the device by sterilizing it”. Still she pressed — probably just to hear me say it out loud — so I had to say that I FLUSHED it. (Accidentally, of course.) “Ohhhh,” said Fraulein IT Gestapo, “flushing is excluded from the warranty coverage.” Whaaaaat? There is a specific waterboarding exclusion. Let me be as clear as possible, I have not and will not torture my blackberry. I asked disbelievingly if this were the first time she had ever heard of the flushing event and Frau Nazi said, “you’re the first to admit it.” I had to pay for the replacement. Oh, the indignities.

I heard from someone else that these events are called “drownings”.
