Obama’s Town Hall

Obama needs to hold town halls all over the country.  He is comfortable talking to people and acknowledging where there are problems and questions.  He categorically denied the heinous fear-mongering rumors of death squads and rationing (as distinct from the rationing that happens now).  He pointed to the importance of change and the needless waste now (for example, giving hundreds of billions of dollars of subsidies to the health care companies who have record profits).

He was willing to accept disagreement.  He was willing to engage in conversation.  He was willing to talk to a Republican.  The astroturfers were smart not to come to this town hall meeting because they would have been exposed for who they are.

The questions could have been tougher and more probing into the specifics.  The President looked ready for them.  The big question I have as a supporter of the reform is how can we make sure this is deficit neutral.  The truth is we won’t know until the plan is underway.  That is scary.  But, right now our health care system is adding $10 billion a year to the deficit.  So if, let’s say, Obama is off by $5 billion, we are still saving money.

My health care plan didn’t cover emergency room care for me because the nearest hospital wasn’t on the approved list.  Thank G-d I can afford it.  What if I couldn’t?  You, the taxpayers, would have paid.   Now, THAT is taking money out of your pocket.

Economic proverb: Your home is not an investment property

Your home is where you live your life, raise your kids and where you can close out the world.

It can have a market value of $0 or $7million but it doesn’t matter.

It is your home and its value is that your kids or loved ones will inherit it (and make some money).

People who bought them as investment properties have lost them and some are homeless.  If you want to be a house as an investment property, then buy a second home but you have to afford it like you do other investments, you use what you have and you don’t borrow.

How many people care why Kate Gosselin still wears her wedding ring?

This is a serious poll.  Please respond.  I cannot understand why it is “newsworthy” enough to appear in print on the top stories of Yahoo.  Please help me understand.  I NEED TO KNOW.

German bride spends first night with crate of vodka

And some thought that only dumb Americans did this type of thing.
And this bride might become a mother some day.  Here that flush?  Civilization circling the toilet drain.

************************************************************************

BERLIN (Reuters) – A bride in Germany spent her wedding night passed out next to a crate of vodka in the back seat of a car and had to be rescued by police when the BMW began to overheat in the sun.

Police in the western city of Cologne said Monday the inebriated 30-year-old remained unconscious even after they smashed the car window to get her out.

“Only after being shaken several times did she eventually regain consciousness,” police said in a statement.

Still clad in her wedding dress, the dazed woman had to scramble through the broken window because she had no idea where the car keys or her husband were, police said.

Florida inmates make, sell their own hot sauce

IS THIS CRAZY OR WHAT???

from Associated Press  Sun Aug 9, 8:53 pm ET

TAMPA, Fla. – A group of Tampa inmates is offering a taste of what it’s like jail — no locks, bars or handcuffs required. But you’d better have an tough stomach to use more than a dash of their “Jailhouse Fire Hot Sauce.” Minimum-security Hillsborough County Jail inmates offer it in “Original,” “Smoke” and “No Escape” varieties, all made from their jail-grown peppers.

They came up with the recipe and started selling it in 2005. Since then, horticulture instructor Allen Boatman estimates they’ve made $10,000 on the sauce. Each bottle is $7.

The income is used to keep up the greenhouse and buy basic supplies.

A typical day on my personal road to Utopia

My 7 year-old was sad this morning because we are redecorating the walls of his room and they are temporarily bare.  “I don’t like my room anymore; it is so desolate,” he declares. I make a mental note to keep a dictionary by my bed.  He wants to cuddle as usual before camp.  (His version of cuddling requires fake sword fighting; fending off dangerous animals in the wild . . . . anything but what envisions as calm cuddling.)  I had been up most of the night because some food didn’t agree with me and I have no energy.  I sleep-walk through being a gemsbok protecting my young calf from some type of ferocious cat — cheetah, leopard, lion, tiger — I can’t remember these kind of details in the mornings.  My son also announces he must be called by his full name or certain accepted nicknames because he is a grown-up boy now.  I make a mental note to weep (when I am fully conscious) that my baby is growing up.

I am running late (which is ordinary) and need to hop a cab. The taxi driver engages me in conversation (because I have the word schmuck printed across my forehead). Then he says, “well let me tell you about me” (the point all along). He is a transgender woman-to-man from Bangladesh, having had the operations in India. Now he is on a roll. He tells me that he will marry his girlfriend when he has the final operation to extend the nerve further up his surgeon-made p*nis so he can have feeling. Aaaaaaaah. Toooooo muuuuuch infoooooo. Ok ok ok ok ok.  I give him an extra tip for the cause.

It was not yet 10am and my day was already too eventful.

Oh, and my 80-something year old aunt believes the astroturfers.  I make a mental note to tear my hair out once I take some aspirin to deaden the pain it will cause.

Protected Speech or Tyranny?

There are groups of “protesters” at town hall meetings to discuss health care reform.  These protesters are paid by organizations that wish to defeat health care reform and shout lies and half-truths intending that those who hear these sounds bites or see the “groundswell of opposition” will be swayed.

These are not grass roots organizations but a roving pack of operatives paid to invade local areas to cast doubt and sow seeds of fear.  This is not democracy as some in the GOP claim.  This is tyranny by big corporations and those politicians supported by big corporations.  This is paid-for speech.

What is astounding to me is that the news organizations are staying away from the story.  This is reminiscent of the passivity of the press in the run up to the Iraq War.  Maybe those in the news corps are too busy digging deeper into Michael Jackson drug dependencies.  Ah, journalism at its best.

I’ll wait until 11pm to get my news from ComedyCentral.  G-d bless you, Jon Stewart.  And you, too, Rachel Maddow (although I am usually putting my son to bed or eating dinner when your show is on).

Glenn Beck — the unhinging of the right

Arguing with Idiots by Glenn Beck: Book Cover

Ok, this is apparently a real book.  It is so ironic since Mr. Beck is one of the biggest idiots ever and you can’t argue with him because he will scream you down.  He looks like Nazi-esque on the cover, which I am sure is intentional and intentionally offensive.

Glenn Beck called President Obama a racist, Sarah Palin calls his health care initiatives evil, Lou Dobbs stokes the birther conspiracy and Rush Limbaugh, well, he just stirs the pot.  This is the Republican think tank.  Septic tank, more precisely.

But, Glenn, you are leading the pack with this book.  You are the star of the septic tank.

Cypriots seeking love potions wear away saints’ tomb —– Reuters

NICOSIA (Reuters) – Unhappy lovers in Cyprus have been taking so much stone from the tomb of Saint Agapitikos to use in love potions that soon there won’t be anything left.

Dust from the grave in the courtyard of the church in the village of Arodes in Paphos district has been used for centuries by the lovelorn, who are supposed to slip it into the drink of their objet d’amour.

But in recent years so many have been filching shards of stone that a quarter of the tomb has disappeared.

Mayor of Arodes Matthaios Stefanou is unclear whether Cypriots’ love lives are becoming more troubled.

“A lot of people have said it works,” he said. “In the last few years I don’t know what’s come over people, but they are flocking to the tomb for the stuff.

“Just the other day locals saw some people visiting the tomb, and they were there for a very long time, in the end they walked off with a huge chunk of stone, maybe even half a kilo of it!”

The island’s antiquities department has been called in to help. “The only thing we can do is examine the damage and try to prevent any further damage,” said Maria Hadjicosti, the acting director. Saint Agapitikos — whose name means “lover” — is believed to have served in the German army of the Crusaders before settling as a hermit in the area.

“You’re very welcome to come and see the tomb, but please don’t go taking any of it with you now,” Stefanou said.
